There are many sleep apnea machines available in the market today for the treatment of severe sleep apnea.

A sleep apnea machine is a mechanical and portable device that produces air pressure to aid breathing while asleep. It has an attached tubing that is  1 ½ to 12 feet long. The other end of the tube is attached to a face mask that is then strapped to the person’s nose and mouth.

The sleep apnea mask is a very important part of the sleep apnea machine. You could buy this with the machine or separately. However, before buying your sleep apnea mask, make sure that you have done your research. There many kinds of masks available in the market today. If you’re a first time buyer, you might be overwhelmed with the choices.

Types of cpap masks

  • Nose masks or triangular masks are the most common type of mask. It covers your nose and has a strap that goes around your head.
  • Some masks covers both the mouth and the nose and requires a chin strap.
  • Oral masks cover only the mouth and is recommended for mouth breathers. It has a heated humidifier to prevent drying of the  throat and lower nasal passages.
  • Nasal pillows are attached only in the nostrils unlike other masks that covers the nose and mouth.

The continuous positive airway pressure  or cpap machine is one of the most effective method to prevent obstructions in the airway while you sleep. It delivers pressurized air to your airway allowing it to stay open and prevent obstruction.

Normally, the problem with cpap is, the extra pressure that you breathe in makes it hard for some people to breathe out. Thus, the full featured Bi-level Positive Airways Pressure  or bipap machine was developed. With the bipap, it is possible to set a pressure for inhaling and another for exhaling.

Sleep apnea can have a mechanical or neurological cause. It can be due to the physical attributes of your nose, mouth and throat. Sometimes, it can be caused by a neurological malfunction.

A sleep apnea machine can be used only if your apnea is due to physical obstructions in your throat and air passages. It is not recommended for central sleep apnea patients, but in some cases, bipap machines can also be used by people with neurological disorders.

The sleep apnea machine was first developed only to treat sleep apnea and designed for home use, thus its portability.  These days, it is already being used in intensive care units of hospitals for patients with respiratory failure. They have discovered that a sleep apnea machine is more convenient and is easier to manage.  It is the better choice rather than inserting tubes in the throat to pump oxygen to aid a patient’s breathing.

The cpap machine delivers compressed air into the throat to keep the muscles from closing or collapsing when it is at a relaxed state during sleep. The air pressure is delivered by means of pumping air through a tube into a cpap mask attached to a person’s mouth or nostrils. Each person is prescribed a certain level of air pressure. The pressure depends on how severe the sleep apnea is. This air pressure is called titrated pressure and is measured in centrimeters of water (cm H2O). The average pressure required for patients with sleep apnea is around 6–14 cm H2O.

A bipap machine delivers air pressure both for inhalation and exhalation for easy breathing. The user receives high pressured air upon inhaling and the pressure is automatically lowered upon exhaling. It has a timed breathing pressure that controls a person’s breathing pressure per minute. When a person stops breathing, it forces air into the person’s airways causing the person to breathe. It allows the person to exert less  effort in breathing and lets the person sleep better.

When buying a cpap machine, remember to check features such as pressure setting buttons, humidifier, portability, and remote control. Check also for self-adjusting, stable pressure with no leaks when set on high pressure. Always ask for a service warranty. The machine may cost around $1,000-$3,000.

Before you make your first purchase, make sure you do a little homework. Search for cpap reviews to help you decide on the best machine for you. Some cpap machines come with batteries for people on the go. These can be used anytime and anywhere. Give a lot of effort when choosing the perfect cpap mask for you since this is the most critical part of the machine.

One important advantage of using a cpap machine is that it provides immediate relief even on the first day of use. It can also be used along with other natural and oral treatments to ensure a better quality of sleep.
