An award winning sleep apnea monitoring mobile application is soon to hit the market once it gets enough funding. SAM is a sleep apnea monitoring mobile application which is designed for Windows-based smartphones and Android phones. It was developed by engineering students in the American University of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates.
SAM allows the users to sense whether they are susceptible to sleep apnea or not. The SAM application uses the phone’s built-in microphone to measure a person’s breathing pattern. Using SAM, the patient’s data is sent to a server where it analyzes the data and diagnoses the patient’s breathing condition. It can tell the level of the user’s sleep apnea condition. Through the server, actual doctors can remotely monitor through the website the user’s progress.
The SAM project gives hope to many sleep apnea sufferers who want to know their chances of having sleep apnea before they invest in very expensive sleep apnea diagnostic procedures inside a sleep clinic. Currently, there are more than 100 million sleep apnea sufferers around the world and many of them still remain undiagnosed. With SAM, it is hoped that more people will become aware of the dangers of sleep apnea and serve as an initial diagnostic tool to find out if they are likely to have sleep apnea.
